Pankham – Not all ‘sowjars’ are the same

It may no longer be fashionable here these days, but what I value above all in this story, written – beautifully – only ten years ago, is its pedagogic sense of nuance: indeed ‘sowjars’ are the same but not the same, and the same goes for cops, politicos and other frauds you love to hate. MB

‘ตะฮ่าว’คือทหาร ครูแพรวาบอกว่าทหารคือรั้วของชาติ เด็กหญิงนากอแสเห็นรั้วของชาติสองสามนายยืนซุ่มข้างรั้วโรงเรียนตั้งแต่เช้า	‘Sowjars’ are soldiers. Teacher Phraewa said soldiers were the country’s fence. Little Na Korsae saw two or three country-fences standing in wait by the school fence since early morning.
นากอแสหัวดียังรู้อีกว่า รั้วโรงเรียนป้องกันหมูไก่ไม่ให้มากินผักปลอดสารพิษที่ครูพานักเรียนปลูกไว้ทำอาหารกลางวัน รั้วของชาติปกป้องอธิปไตย จากบ้านไกลมาอยู่บนดอย	Clever Na Korsae also knew that the school fence prevented pigs and chickens from eating the chemical-free vegetables teacher had the pupils grow to eat for lunch. Leaving their distant homes, the country-fences came to this hill to Protect Sovereignty.	=Note the use of capitals to imply pomposity of concept way beyond children’s understanding, even clever Na Korsae’s.
ตะฮ่าวชุดไหนผลัดเปลี่ยนมาประจำฐานก็ชอบมาจีบครูแพรวา จนครูยกเป็นอุทาหรณ์สอนเด็กผู้หญิง – โตเป็นสาวให้ระวังเวลามีผู้ชายมาจีบ โดยเฉพาะผู้ชายต่างถิ่น ส่วนใหญ่ชีกอจีบดะไปทั่ว ไข่ทิ้งตามป่าเขา	Whichever group of sowjars came to change the guard they all liked to flirt with Teacher Phraewa so that teacher took it as an exemplar to teach the girls: when you’re older, beware when boys come wooing, especially outsiders, so randy they drop their eggs all over the mountain.
ตอนแรกที่เห็นตะฮ่าวยืนเขียวทะมึนอยู่ข้างรั้วนากอแสใจเสีย นึกว่าวันนี้จะไม่ได้ไปไหนเสียแล้ว ปกติถ้ามีแขกเป็นผู้ชายมาเยี่ยมโรงเรียนครูแพรวาจะขอให้เธออยู่เป็นเพื่อน แต่วันนี้ครูไม่เห็นว่าอะไรตอนเธอขออนุญาตไปช่วยพ่อแม่เผาไร่	The first time she saw sowjars standing in dark green by the fence, Na Korsae felt bad. She figured that today she wouldn’t go anywhere. Usually, when men came to visit the school, Teacher Phraewa asked her to keep her company, but today teacher didn’t say anything when she asked for permis- sion to go and help her parents burn the field.

Whenever there was heavy work at home, she’d ask teacher to let her go and help her family. Mother said that staying with teacher she’d learn well, she’d speak proper Thai. Some teased her she already was teach- er’s daughter, staying over at school unwill-ing to go home.	== = พูดภาษาไทยชัด: literally, ‘would speak Thai clearly’.
นากอแสคอยช่วยครูล้างถ้วยล้างชามทำกับข้าวเฝ้าหมูดูฟืนในครัว อยู่กับครูสนุกดีมีขนมอร่อยกินบ่อยกว่าใคร โรงเรียนมีปัญหาอะไรก็ไปบอกพ่อ พ่อเป็นพ่อหลวง ต้องรับผิดชอบทั้งหมู่บ้านและโรงเรียน พ่อบอกว่าไม่เฉพาะแต่ลูกบ้านกับคุณครูหรอกที่ต้องดูแล ใครขึ้นมาเยือนดอยลูแอพ่อต้องดูแลทั้งนั้น	Na Korsae helped teacher wash the dishes, cook, feed the pigs, see to the fire- wood in the kitchen. It was fun being with teacher. She had delicious snacks to eat more often than anyone else. When there was a problem at school she went to tell father. Father was the village head, he had to take responsibility for the whole village and the school. Father told her it wasn’t only the villagers and teacher he had to look after: whoever came up the hill to visit he had to look after as well.
เธอสังเกตว่าบางช่วงตะฮ่าวมาเยอะบางช่วงก็บางตา ขึ้นอยู่กับสถานการณ์ตามแนวชายแดน บางชุดขยันวิ่งออกกำลังไปถึงตีนดอย ไปกลับเกือบสามสิบกิโลเมตร บางชุดวิ่งมาดูหน้าครูแพรวาแล้วก็วกกลับฐาน บางคนนิสัยเสีย ชอบล้อครูแพรวาตอนนำเด็กทำกายบริหารหน้าเสาธงว่าออกท่าทางเหมือนนักร้องบนเวทีคอนเสิร์ต บ้างตะโกนข้ามรั้วไม้ไผ่ล้อเด็ก “เหยาะแหยะๆ ออกท่าทางให้ดูกระฉับกระเฉงหน่อย”	She noticed that at times many sowjars came, at other times only a few, depending on the situation along the border. Some of them were eager to exercise and ran all the way to the foot of the hill, almost thirty kilometres return. Some ran just to have a look at Teacher Phraewa’s face and then ran back to base. Some of them had bad manners, they liked to tease Teacher Phraewa when she took the children to do PE in front of the national flag by mimicking a singer on a concert stage; others shouted across the bamboo fence teasing the children with ‘So listless! Come, come, perk up, will ya!’	== = = = = = = = ออกท่าทางให้ดูกระฉับกระเฉงหน่อย: literally, ‘show yourselves a little more lively’.
นากอแสไม่ชอบเลย ครูแพรวาเองก็คงไม่ชอบเหมือนกันแต่ครูทำไม่สนใจเพื่อไม่ให้ฝ่ายนั้นได้ใจ อะไรกัน จะจีบสาวทั้งทีไม่พูดคำหวานเอาแต่ตะโกนเสียงดังอยู่ได้ บางครั้งยังเสียมารยาทโผล่หน้าเข้ามาในห้องเรียนไม่ขออนุญาตครู จนครูแพรวาอึดอัดไม่เป็นอันสอน	Na Korsae didn’t like it at all. Teacher Phraewa probably not either, but she pretended to pay no attention so as not to give them heart. How could they woo a young woman without uttering a sweet word, shouting loudly instead? Sometimes they were impolite to the point of showing their faces in the classroom without teach- er’s permission, making Teacher Phraewa so uneasy she didn’t feel like teaching.
นากอแสเห็นใจครูแพรวา ต้องดูแลโรงเรียนคนเดียว ลำพังสอนหนังสือเด็กเกือบสามสิบคนก็หนักหนาอยู่แล้ว สอนเสร็จยังต้องคอยแจกยาพาราฯให้ชาวบ้านอีก หลายคนเทียวมาขอแล้วขออีก ขอไปตุนไว้ บางรายยิ่งร้ายเอาไปให้ผัวเสพกับฝิ่นกับยาบ้า ยายนาฟูข้างโรงเรียนนั่นไม่ชอบกินยาแผนปัจจุบันแต่เทียวกระเตงหลานมาขอกะปิอยู่ได้แทบทุกวัน ครูสอนอยู่แท้ๆ ยังต้องหยุดสอนไปหยิบกะปิให้	Na Korsae sympathised with Teacher Phraewa. She had to run the school on her own. Teaching almost thirty children by oneself was hard enough, yet after classes she still had to deal out Paracetamol to villagers as well. Many came for it time and time again only to hoard it. Some did even worse: they took it to give their husbands with opium or speed pills. School neighbour Grannie Na Foo didn’t like to take modern medicine but came round, grandchild astride her hip, to ask for shrimp paste almost every day. Teacher had to stop teaching to go and get it for her.
เด็กหญิงเคยเล่าเรื่องนี้ให้พ่อฟัง พ่อบอกครูว่าทีหลังไม่ต้องให้เดี๋ยวจะติดเป็นนิสัย แต่ครูยังใจดีไม่ว่าอะไร ให้กะปิเหมือนเดิม ครูว่ายายนาฟูแก่แล้วน่าสงสารเลี้ยงหลานตัวเล็กอยู่คนเดียว ลูกสาวไปทำงานในเมืองไม่ค่อยมาเยี่ยม อีกอย่างนอกจากครูแล้วบนดอยนี้ก็มียายนาฟูอยู่คนเดียวที่กินกะปิ ชาวลาหู่บนดอยลูแอไม่ชอบกลิ่นกะปิ นากอแสรู้ดี เพียงสงสัยถ้าเกิดมีคนทะลึ่งชอบกินกะปิอีกสักคนสองคนและเทียวมาขอที่โรงเรียนไม่ยอมซื้อเองครูจะทำอย่างไร	The little girl had told her father about it. Father told teacher to stop doing it or it would become a habit. But teacher kept being kind, said nothing and gave her shrimp paste as before. She said Grannie Na Foo was old and pitiful, raising her grandchild by herself. Her daughter had gone to work in town and seldom came visiting. Besides, apart from teacher on this hill there was only Grannie Na Foo who ate shrimp paste. The Lahus on Loo Ae Hill didn’t like the smell of shrimp paste, Na Korsae knew this well, but she wondered what teacher would do if there were a few more people on the hill oddball enough to like shrimp paste and ask for it from the school instead of buying their own.
ยายนาฟูนี่ก็แปลกคน สะแหลนอยากกินส้มตำอย่างคนกอเลาะ เห็นเคยบอกครูว่าคราวหนึ่งลูกสาวกลับมาเยี่ยมและทำส้มตำมะละกอให้กิน ยายติดใจต่อมาเลยหัดตำกินเอง แกไม่ใส่ปลาร้าหรือปูดองเหมือนต้นฉบับแต่ใช้กะปิแทน แก่แล้วริกินอะไรแปลกๆ นากอแสนึกขำ	Grannie Na Foo was strange indeed. She fancied eating papaya salad as Kor Loh people did. She had told teacher that once her daughter, back on a visit, had made her papaya salad and she’d liked it so much she then tried to make some herself. She didn’t use fermented fish or pickled crab as in the original recipe but used shrimp paste instead. Old as she is yet still going for strange dishes, Na Korsae thought, amused.	=
ครูแพรวาเคยบอกว่า ตะฮ่าวแต่ละคนแต่ละกลุ่มที่เห็นเพ่นพ่านบนดอยแต่งชุดคล้ายกันแต่ไม่เหมือนกัน ก่อนนี้นากอแสคิดว่าตะฮ่าวก็คือตะฮ่าว ตะฮ่าวไทย ตะฮ่าวไทยใหญ่ ตะฮ่าวพม่า นากอแสไม่อยากเข้าใกล้ไม่น่าไว้ใจ เคยมีคนว่าตะฮ่าวบนดอยแบกปืนไล่หมา ตะคอกเด็กขี้มูกเขรอะ ดีแต่ขู่คนดอย	Teacher Phraewa once told her that those sowjars seen roaming around the hill may be wearing similar uniforms but they weren’t all the same. Before that Na Korsae thought that sowjars were sowjars, whether Thai, Shan or Burmese. She didn’t want to get close to any of them, they weren’t to be trusted. Someone once said sowjars on the hill carried weapons, chased dogs, shouted at snotty kids and were only good at threatening hill people.
นากอแสเพิ่งเข้าใจเมื่ออาทิตย์ที่แล้วนี่เอง ตะฮ่าวเหมือนกันแต่ไม่เหมือนกันอย่างครูว่า วันนั้นนากอแสไปช่วยพ่อแม่เผาไร่เป็นวันแรก ช่วงนี้ฝนลงถี่ ลูกบ้านส่วนใหญ่เริ่มปลูกข้าวโพดกันแล้ว แต่ไร่ผู้นำยังเผาหญ้าไม่เสร็จขุดดินไปได้ไม่ถึงไหน ดีที่ได้ลูกบ้านหลายคนไปช่วย หากไม่เกิดเรื่องเสียก่อนวันนี้ก็คงได้ปลูกข้าวโพด	Na Korsae understood only last week. Sowjars were the same but not the same as teacher had said. That day Na Korsae had gone to help her parents burn the field on the first day. By then the rainy season had begun. Most of the villagers had started to plant maize, but in the village chief’s field the grass hadn’t finished burning and turning over the earth was nowhere near ended. It was good that several villagers had gone to help. If nothing had happened beforehand, today maize would have been planted.
หมู่นี้พ่อไม่ค่อยได้อยู่บ้าน ตั้งแต่เข้าโครงการหมู่บ้านปลอดยาเสพติดพ่อต้องไปอบรมที่โน่นที่นี่แทบทุกอาทิตย์ พ่อเคยบ่นเหนื่อยกับการเป็นผู้นำหมู่บ้านมาตั้งนานแล้ว ช่วงไหนประชุมอบรมบ่อยแทบไม่มีเวลาดูแลไร่ มีคนเป็นแทนเมื่อไหร่จะลาออกเสียที แต่ป่านนี้ยังไม่มีใครแทน ใครก็ออกตัวว่าพูดไทยไม่เก่ง ติดต่อทางการไม่เป็นเหมือนพ่อ	These days father seldom stayed at home. From early in the morning, with the drug-free-village programme father had to go training here and there almost every week. He had long been complaining about how tiring it was to be village headman. In those periods when there were training sessions often, there was almost no time to see to the field. When would there be a replacement so he could resign? But there still was no volunteer. Everyone professed himself unable to speak good Thai or contact officialdom as father did.
ลูกบ้านแทบทุกคนรักและเคารพพ่อนากอแส พ่อช่วยเหลือลูกบ้านสารพัดเรื่อง พาไปหาหมอ ติดต่อกับทางการ ส่วนใหญ่ได้สัญชาติไทยก็เพราะพ่อช่วยวิ่งเต้นและแนะนำเรื่องหลักฐาน บางหมู่บ้านไม่มีผู้นำคอยเป็นธุระ ลูกบ้านไม่รู้จะทำอย่างไร ก็ต้องอาศัยเพื่อนบ้านที่มีรถจักรยานยนต์ช่วยพาไปถ่ายรูปเพื่อประกอบหลักฐานขอสัญชาติ กว่าจะได้เรื่องต้องเสียค่าใช้จ่ายเกินจำเป็น แต่ลูกบ้านของพ่อนั่งรถกระบะไปพร้อมกัน ใครหลักฐานครบ มีคุณสมบัติตามทางการกำหนดก็ทำเรื่องได้เลย พ่อบอกว่าตอนนี้ชาวลูแอได้รับสัญชาติไทยไปเกือบครึ่งหมู่บ้านแล้ว	Almost all the villagers loved and res- pected Na Korsae’s father. Father helped the villagers over all sorts of things, took them to the doctor, contacted officials … Most got Thai nationality because father had pulled strings and advised them about documents. Some villages didn’t have headmen to help them. Villagers didn’t know what to do. They had to rely on neighbours who had motorcycles to help take them to town for mug shots to go with the documents requesting nationality. Before they could get it, they faced extra expenses, but father’s villagers sat in a pickup truck and went together; those who had all the documents answering to official specifications had their request processed. Father told her that now almost half of the village of Loo Ae people had obtained Thai nationality.
วันนั้นเพื่อนบ้านไปช่วยงานกันหลายคนครึกครื้นทีเดียว เสียดายครูแพรวาไม่ได้ไปด้วย ครูเองก็ชอบไปเที่ยวไร่ชาวบ้าน ว่างสอนเมื่อไหร่ถ้าไม่ติดธุระไปไหนเป็นต้องชวนเด็กๆ ไปกินข้าวไร่คนโน้นคนนี้ ครูเคยบอกว่านากอแสมีไร่สวย ติดภูเขาติดลำธาร ที่อย่างนี้คนในเมืองอยากเป็นเจ้าของ	That day was merry as many villagers had come to help. Too bad Teacher Phraewa didn’t come too. She liked to walk through the villagers’ fields. When she was free from teaching and other tasks, she’d invite the children to go and eat in this or that field. Teacher once told Na Korsae that her field, next to the mountain and the stream, was beautiful. A field like this people in town would like to own.
นากอแสช่วยงานแต่เช้ายันบ่าย บางช่วงขุดดินเหนื่อยก็หลบไปจับแมงกว่างกับเพื่อน ปล่อยให้พวกผู้ใหญ่คุยกันเรื่องจะอื่อกับนาสีโขมงโฉงเฉง ผัวเมียคู่นี้เป็นข่าวฮือฮาตั้งแต่เดือนก่อน ทั้งสองถูกหวยได้เงินเจ็ดหมื่น เจ้าตัวเคยบ่นว่าที่จริงควรจะได้เป็นแสนหากเจ้ามือไม่โกง หลายคนบอกเงินได้มาง่ายได้เท่านี้ก็ดีแล้ว เป็นคนดอยเขายอมจ่ายก็ดีถมถืด วันนั้นตัวจะอื่อเองก็มาช่วยงานพ่อ มาคนเดียวให้เมียเลี้ยงลูกอยู่บ้าน สองคนนี้มาช่วยงานพ่อเป็นประจำ คงรู้สึกเป็นบุญคุณที่พ่อช่วยให้มีบัตรประชาชนเสียที	Na Korsae helped with the work all morning until early afternoon. At times when she was tired of digging the soil, she went to catch beetles with friends, leaving the adults talking boisterously about Ja Ue and Na See. That married couple had been notorious since last month, when they made seventy thousand baht on the lottery. They complained that actually they should have got a hundred thousand if the dealer hadn’t cheated. Many people told them that that money had come easy, so having this much was good enough, and that the dealer had accepted to pay a hill dweller at all was remarkable. That day Ja Ue himself had come to help father. He had come alone, leaving his wife to take care of the children at home. The two of them came to help father regularly, feeling grateful that father had helped them get identity cards.
ระหว่างทำงานใครก็พูดถึงเงินเหยียบแสนที่สองคนนั้นได้มาง่ายดาย เทียวถามกันว่าถ้ามีเงินก้อนโตอย่างนั้นบ้างจะเอาไปทำอะไร ถามคนอื่นแต่ตัวเองทำตาลอยอย่างมีความสุข คนถูกถามก็สาธยายสารพัด จะออกรถกระบะไว้ขนขิงไปขายในเมือง จะสร้างบ้านให้สวยเหมือนคนกอเลาะในอำเภอ จะซื้อคาราโอเกะมาไว้ร้องเพลง จะซื้อเครื่องเล่นซีดีไว้ดูหนังโป๊ เพ้อได้ไม่ยอมเลิก ไฟฟ้าก็ยังไม่มีจะดูกันได้อย่างไร ฝ่ายจะอื่อไม่ยอมพูดจาเอาแต่ยิ้มไม่ยอมหุบ	While working they talked about the almost hundred thousand the two of them had earned so easily, and asked one another what they’d do if they were landed with so much money themselves. As they asked the others each had dreamy eyes reflecting happiness. Those who were ask- ed would answer at length: buy a pickup to take ginger to sell in town, build a beautiful house like Kor Loh people had at the district, buy a karaoke and have it fitted for singing songs, buy a DVD player to watch X-rated movies, no end of empty dreams – with no electricity yet, how would they watch them? The dreamer didn’t answer but kept smiling away.	== = = = = = Obviously, the author doesn’t watch porn or he’d know you don’t watch movies, blue or otherwise, on a CD player (เครื่องเล่นซีดี) – or so says my editor: I didn’t know that either.
นากอแสเคยได้ยินเมียจะอื่อคุยกับแม่ว่าอยากเปิดร้านขายของชำในหมู่บ้าน ลงไปซื้อของเข้าร้านอาทิตย์ละสองครั้ง ผัวเข้าตลาดเมียผูกล่อลงรอขนของที่ปากทางขึ้นดอย ตอนแรกจะอื่อว่าจะหาซื้อรถกระบะไว้ใช้แต่พ่อเตือนว่าอย่าดีกว่า เงินเจ็ดหมื่นเก็บไว้สำรองในอนาคตเผื่อเหลือเผื่อขาด มีรถแล้วสิ้นเปลืองหลายอย่าง ค่าน้ำมันค่าดูแลรักษา เงินเท่านี้ซื้อได้อย่างดีก็รถมือสอง บางทีอาจต้องซ่อมอีกเสียเงินเพิ่มอีกกว่าจะวิ่งได้ เรื่องความปลอดภัยก็น่าเป็นห่วง เดี๋ยวนี้ยิงกันบ่อย คนดอยมีรถกระบะมักถูกเพ่งเล็งว่าพัวพันกับยาบ้า ปะเหมาะเคราะห์ร้ายโดนไปด้วยมันไม่คุ้ม	Na Korsae once heard Ja Ue’s wife tell her mother she’d like to open a grocery store in the village, go down to buy things to sell in the shop twice a week, husband going to market, wife taking the mule down to the bottom of the hill to wait to bring up his purchases. At first Ja Ue said he’d look to buy a pickup but father warned him not to but keep the seventy thousand to use when the need arose in the future. Having a motorcar meant sundry expenses, cost of petrol, cost of repairs … With only this much, at best he could only buy second- hand, maybe there’d be repairs to be made, meaning expenses, before it could run, and then there was the question of safety. These days there were frequent shootouts. Hill people with pickups were suspected of being involved in drug trafficking. It was courting back luck and not worth it.
บ้านลูแอไม่ใช่ทางผ่านยาบ้าก็จริง แต่ยาบ้าก็ยังมีให้เห็น คนข้างนอกแอบมาจ้างชาวบ้านขนยาเป็นเงินไม่กี่พันบาท เคยมีคนในหมู่บ้านโดนจับป่านนี้ยังไม่พ้นโทษ ขนยาบ้าให้คนอื่นรวยแต่ตัวเองถูกจับคนเดียว พ่อว่าเสียรู้เขา บางคนพ่อไปบอกก็ไม่เชื่อ แต่ใครทำใครเสพพ่อรู้ อยู่ดอยเดียวกันเรื่องแบบนี้ไม่ได้เป็นความลับเลย	Sure, the village of Loo Ae wasn’t on the route of speed trafficking but still there were speed pills to be seen, outsiders discreetly came to hire villagers to transport the drug for a few thousand baht. Some people in the village had been caught this way and were still detained, transporting drugs to make other people rich but being the only ones caught, it was falling into a trap, father said. Some people father warned but they didn’t believe him, but who was involved, who took speed, father knew. Living on the same hill this sort of story was no secret.
พ่อบอกว่าดอยลูแอของเราแม้ไม่มีปัญหายาเสพติดระบาดหนักเหมือนที่อื่นแต่ก็ไว้ใจไม่ได้ เรื่องแบบนี้คุมลำบาก พ่อห่วงลูกหลานจะติดยาเพราะติดง่ายเลิกยาก ติดแล้วไม่ได้งาน ผอมแห้ง ถูกจับเข้าคุก บ้างก็ถูกยิงตาย แต่คนทำผิดก็ต้องว่าไปตามกฎหมาย พ่อเองต้องคอยเป็นหูเป็นตาให้ทางการ คนต่างถิ่นเข้ามาในหมู่บ้านก็ต้องมาแจ้งพ่อก่อน	Father said that in Loo Ae the drug problem wasn’t as bad as elsewhere but one couldn’t be too confident. This sort of thing was hard to control. Father worried youngsters would get addicted because it was easy to be so and hard to quit, you became addicted and then no more work, you lost weight, were caught and jailed, some were shot dead but wrongdoers had to be treated according to the law. Father himself had to report to the authorities. Strangers entering the village had to report to him first.
ใครก็ว่าพ่อเป็นผู้นำที่ร่วมมือกับทางการปราบปรามยาเสพติดอย่างเข้มแข็ง เวลาเจ้าหน้าที่เข้ามาปฏิบัติงานมักมาหาพ่อก่อนอื่นใด ถ้ามีการจับกุมคนในหมู่บ้านหรือตรวจค้นลูกบ้านคนไหนพ่อก็ต้องไปร่วมเป็นสักขีพยาน	Everybody said father was a headman who joined hands tightly with the authorities for drug eradication. When officials came to perform their duties, they came to father first. If people in the village were arrested or their houses searched, father had to be there as a witness.
ถึงพ่อจะเบื่อที่ต้องรับแขกบ่อยๆ แถมหลายครั้งไปอบรมผู้นำหมู่บ้านปลอดยาเสพติดที่ทางการจัดขึ้นก็ไม่ได้ตังค์ บางทีพ่อต้องหารถไปกันเองกับผู้นำหมู่บ้านอื่น แต่พ่อบอกว่าอย่างน้อยก็ทำให้ภาษาไทยของพ่อดีขึ้น ที่สำคัญยังได้ความรู้มาไว้แนะนำลูกบ้าน	Even though father was fed up having to receive guests often, and on top of that many times go and train as a headman of a drug-free village as arranged by officialdom with no pay, sometimes he had to find a car to go there with headmen of other villages, but he said that at least it improved his Thai and, most important, he acquired know- ledge to advise the villagers.
เรื่องประหลาดเกิดขึ้นจนได้ บ่ายนั้นทำงานกันอยู่ดีๆ มีคนวิ่งหน้าตื่นมาบอกว่ามีเจ้าหน้าที่แต่งตัวเหมือนตะฮ่าวมาค้นบ้านจะอื่อ ให้เจ้าตัวไปปั๊มนิ้วมือยินยอม	And then something weird did happen. That afternoon as they were all working, someone ran up with an excited face to tell them officials dressed like sowjars had come to search Ja Ue’s house and Ja Ue had to provide a fingerprint to authorise the search.
ทุกคนสงสัยว่าทำไมคราวนี้พ่อไม่รู้เรื่องเลย ไร่ผู้นำกับบ้านจะอื่ออยู่ไม่ไกลเกินเดินถึง คนที่มาตามก็ไม่เห็นบอกว่าเจ้าหน้าที่บอกให้พ่อไปด้วย แต่พ่อทิ้งงานในไร่ตามไปจนได้ ทุกคนก็กรูตามกันไป เรื่องใหญ่อย่างนี้ใครก็อยากไปดู	Everybody wondered why this time father didn’t know anything about this. Ja Ue’s house was within walking distance from the headman’s field. The man who came didn’t say anything about the officials telling father to go there too, but father left the work in the field and went at once, followed by ev- eryone else: a big story like this everybody wanted to witness.
ถึงบ้านจะอื่อนากอแสเห็นชายฉกรรจ์สี่ห้าคนยืนค้ำหัวชาวบ้านที่มามุงดู ทั้งหมดอยู่ในชุดเขียวทะมึนอย่างเครื่องแบบตะฮ่าวที่นากอแสคุ้นตา ต่างมีอาวุธครบมือ บางคนแบกเอ็มสิบหกบางคนพกปืนสั้น นากอแสไม่คุ้นหน้าคนเหล่านี้ พ่อเองก็คงไม่เคยเห็น ฝ่ายนั้นบอกว่ามาจากหน่วยงานซึ่งมีหน้าที่ปราบปรามยาเสพติดโดยตรงขอค้นบ้านจะอื่อ ว่าแล้วคนที่น่าจะเป็นหัวหน้าก็ยื่นกระดาษให้จะอื่อปั้มนิ้วมือ	At Ja Ue’s house, Na Korsae saw four or five able-bodied men who stood over the heads of villagers who had come to watch. They all wore dark green uniforms like sowjar uniforms Na Korsae was used to seeing; each was well armed, some with M-16s, others with pistols. Na Korsae didn’t know any of them; her father himself had probably never seen them either. They said they were from a drug eradication unit, asked forthwith to search Ja Ue’s house and having said this much the one who must be their leader held out a sheet for Ja Ue to affix his fingerprint.
จะอื่อหน้าเสียมองหน้าพ่อขอความเห็น พ่อขมวดคิ้วบอกว่าต้องหาคนที่อ่านภาษาไทยได้ดีมาอ่านก่อนว่าในกระดาษเขียนว่าอย่างไร ชายแปลกหน้าบอกว่าไม่ต้องเสียเวลาเดี๋ยวจะอ่านให้ฟัง ฟังจากข้อความในนั้นนากอแสพอรู้ว่าเป็นคำยินยอมให้ตรวจค้นบ้านธรรมดา แต่ระหว่างที่พ่อกับจะอื่อลังเลอยู่นั้นนากอแสเห็นเจ้าหน้าที่อีกคนเข้าไปค้นภายในกระท่อม จะอื่อเห็นเข้าก็ห่วงเมียขอเข้าไปดู เจ้าหน้าที่ข้างนอกรีบกันไว้	Ja Ue turned pale and stared at father inquiringly. Father frowned and said he had to find someone able to read Thai well to read out what was written on the paper. The stranger said that wasn’t necessary, it was a waste of time, he’d read it out himself. Listening to what was in that document, Na Korsae could see it was an ordinary statement allowing house search, but while father and Ja Ue hesitated, Na Korsae saw another official enter and begin to search the hut. Seeing this too, Ja Ue worried about his wife and asked to go and see her. The officials outside hastened to prevent him.
พ่อเริ่มหงุดหงิดอย่างที่นากอแสไม่เคยเห็นบ่อยนัก พ่อบอกจะอื่อเป็นภาษาลาหู่ว่าอย่าเพิ่งปั๊มนิ้วมือ เจ้าหน้าที่บางคนคงพอฟังออกจ้องหน้าพ่อเหมือนจะกินเลือดกินเนื้อ อึดใจต่อมาคนที่เข้าไปภายในกระท่อมกลับออกมารายงานเสียงดังว่าเจอยาบ้า อีกคนที่ถือกล้องอยู่ด้วยถ่ายรูปพึ่บพั่บ ทันใดนั้นเมียจะอื่อก็วิ่งร้องไห้ออกมาบอกพ่อว่าในบ้านไม่เคยมีของผิดกฎหมายกระทั่งเจ้าหน้าที่เข้าไป	Father began to be incensed as Na Korsae had seldom seen him. Father told Ja Ue in Lahu language not to give his fingerprint. Some of the officials, who must have understood, glared at father as if to swallow him alive. The next moment the man who had entered the hut came out, reporting in a loud voice that he had found speed. Another man who held a camera took pictures there and then. Right then Ja Ue’s wife ran out crying, telling father that there had never been any illegal substance in the house until that official entered it.	หงุดหงิด: literally, ‘irritated’.
นากอแสเห็นพ่อเหมือนจะร้องไห้ตอนพูดออกไปว่าพ่อเป็นพ่อหลวงหมู่บ้าน พ่อรู้ดีว่าลูกบ้านแต่ละคนเป็นอย่างไร จะอื่อกับนาสีเป็นคนดีไม่เคยยุ่งเกี่ยวเรื่องผิดกฎหมาย พ่อพูดอีกว่าพ่อเคยไปอบรมมา ตามกฎหมายเจ้าหน้าที่จะตรวจค้นได้ต้องให้เจ้าของบ้านลงชื่อยินยอมก่อนไม่ใช่ทำอย่างนี้ เจ้าหน้าที่ไม่ฟังเสียงบอกว่าคนทำผิดก็ต้องโดนจับ แถมถามพ่อว่าหัวหมออย่างนี้อยากเข้าคุกใช่ไหม	Na Korsae saw father on the verge of tears as he uttered that he was headman of this village and knew well what every villager was like. Ja Ue and Na See were good people that had never been involved in illegal matters. Father added that he had followed training, by law for officials to search a house its owner had to sign to allow it, this was no way of doing things. The official didn’t listen, said wrongdoers must be arrested, and on top of it asked father if he wanted to go to jail too, acting up like this.
ตอนนั้นชาวลูแอเกือบทั้งหมู่บ้านมามุงกันแน่นขนัด กระทั่งเจ้าหน้าที่พาผู้ต้องหาไปไหนไม่ได้ คนหัวหน้าเริ่มโมโห หาว่าพ่อขัดขวางการปฏิบัติงาน อีกคนยิงปืนขึ้นฟ้าหลายนัด เด็กที่แม่กระเตงไปร่วมมุงดูร้องไห้จ้า พ่อคงไม่รู้จะทำอย่างไรเลยหันมาบอกนากอแสให้รีบไปบอกครูมาช่วยดูหน่อย	By then almost all of the Loo Ae villagers were pressed all around so that the officials couldn’t get away with the accused. The leader began to get angry, claiming that father was preventing him from doing his work. Another official fired several shots in the air. Children their mothers had taken on their hips to have a look too shrieked. Father didn’t know what to do, so he turned to Na Korsae and told her to run to teacher and tell her to come over and help.
นากอแสวิ่งไม่คิดชีวิตจากบ้านจะอื่อถึงโรงเรียนยังรู้สึกว่าใช้เวลานานเป็นปี คิดอยู่ว่าโคตรโชคดีเลยที่วันนั้นครูแพรวาไม่ได้ลงดอยไปไหน ปกติวันอาทิตย์ถ้าไม่ใช่ช่วงประชุมประจำเดือนครูจะเข้าตลาดเตรียมเสบียงสำหรับแต่ละสัปดาห์	Na Korsae ran like the clappers from Ja Ue’s house to the school and yet felt it was taking her a year to get there. She thought how lucky it was that today Teacher Phraewa hadn’t left the hill to go anywhere. Usually on Sunday if there was no monthly meeting, teacher would go to the market to stock up for the following week.
ครูแพรวายืนรออยู่แล้ว คงตั้งแต่ได้ยินเสียงปืน พอรู้เรื่องเข้าก็ตกใจ รีบสตาร์ทรถมอเตอร์ไซค์ บอกให้นากอแสซ้อนท้ายก่อนบึ่งไปฐานทหารที่อยู่เกือบติดชายแดน ห่างออกไปเกือบสิบกิโลเมตร	Teacher Phraewa already stood waiting probably since she had heard the gunshots. When she heard what was going on she was shocked. She promptly started her motorcycle, told Na Korsae to ride pillion before darting to the military camp near the border almost ten kilometres away.
หลังจากครูเล่าเรื่องให้ฟังตะฮ่าวเกือบสิบคนรีบขึ้นรถตามลงมาจากฐาน พอถึงที่เกิดเหตุตะฮ่าวกลุ่มที่มาใหม่กันพ่อกับครูแพรวาให้ห่างออกมาจากฝูงชนและรับปากครูว่าทุกอย่างจะเรียบร้อย นากอแสคล่องตัวไม่ถูกกันเหมือนครูกับพ่อ แอบแทรกผู้คนเข้าไปดูใกล้ๆ เห็นหัวหน้าของทั้งสองฝ่ายคุยอะไรกันยืดยาว	After teacher had told them what hap- pened, almost ten sowjars jumped into a truck and came down from the camp. When they reached Ja Ue’s house, this new group of sowjars ordered father and Teacher Phraewa to stay away from the crowd of people and promised teacher everything would be all right. Na Korsae wasn’t taken aside like father and teacher, so she dextrously slipped through the crowd to have a close look and she saw the leaders of both sides talk for a long time.
ตะฮ่าวคุยกับตะฮ่าวไม่นานเหตุการณ์ก็สงบ ผ่านไปครู่ใหญ่ ตะฮ่าวยศนายพันที่ครูแพรวาเพิ่งตามตัวมาแจ้งครูว่าไม่มีอะไรเกิดขึ้น เข้าใจผิดกันนิดหน่อย นากอแสไม่เข้าใจเรื่องวุ่นวายขนาดนี้ไม่มีอะไรได้ยังไง	Sowjars talked with sowjars and before long the situation quietened down. A long while later, the colonel who had come along with teacher told teacher nothing had happened; it was just a misunderstanding. Na Korsae didn’t understand: with a big hoopla like this, how come nothing had happened?
คล้อยหลังผู้มาเยือนไม่ได้รับเชิญ จะอื่อยังปากคอสั่นหลุดปากว่าพรุ่งนี้คงต้องล้มหมูเลี้ยงผี นากอแสคิดว่าต้องเป็นผีเขาหลวงแน่ที่มารังควาน ผีป่าผีไร่ทั่วไปเซ่นไก่ก็พอกิน	After the visitors weren’t invited to stay, Ja Ue, still quite shaken, let out that tomorrow he’d kill a pig to offer the spirit. Na Korsae thought it must be the spirit of the big mountain for sure that had come to harass. For ordinary field and jungle spirits, offerings of chickens were enough.
ภายหลังนากอแสได้ยินจะอื่อบ่นว่า มีเงินแล้วยุ่งเสียจริง สงสัยต้องเอาไปฝังดินเหมือนพ่อเฒ่าแม่เฒ่าหลายคน เพื่อนปลอบว่าเงินได้มาง่ายไม่ติดคุกก็ดีถมถืด	Afterwards, Na Korsae heard Ja Ue complain that having money was really a hassle, he might as well bury it in the earth as did many ancestors. His friends com- forted him by saying that with money that had come easy, not being jailed was more than good enough.
