Beggars can’t be choosers. The previous theme (layout) having been mysteriously ‘retired’ by the powers-that-be at WordPress, I’ve had to make do at short notice with this one (Delicacy by name) which at least accommodates my three columns. I’ll endeavour to fix all the resultant bungling as soon as time and health allow.

Meanwhile, the show goes on: here is a piece of wishful thinking that predates 9/11 by a good half a dozen years. Bad vibes; good story. MB

เครื่องขึ้นมาอยู่ในระดับความสูง 18,000 ฟุต และรักษาระดับเพดานบินนี้อยู่เหนือผืนป่าอันชอุ่ม เขากวาดสายตามองไปยังพื้นสีเขียวสุดลูกหูลูกตาเบื้องล่าง ใบหน้าของเขาขณะนั้นแดงระเรื่อ หากมีใครนั่งคุยอยู่ใกล้ๆ คงได้กลิ่นเหล้าโชย	The plane rose to an altitude of eighteen thousand feet and maintained that level as it flew over a ground of ver- dant jungle. He surveyed the green ground below that stretched as far as the eye could see. His face then was flushed. A flight companion sitting beside him would have perceived wafts of alcohol.

In cases of emergency, if the digital brain went haywire, it was still possible to control the plane manually, or on days when visibility was real bad, human control was necessary as well.	ทั้งๆ ที่…แต่: a common mistake in translation is to add ‘but’ to ‘even though’ as the Thai text has it. That ‘liquid the colour of precious topaz’ is actually referred to in English as ‘the amber liquid’. The Thai text says ‘the colour of topaz’ – topaz can be blue, white, pink or gold.

There were no clouds and he could see far. He raised the bottle placed by his side and took another swig, felt sweet heat radiate down to his stomach before he let out pungent air through his mouth, and then he looked sideways downwards once again. The plane had just flown past the Mekong river which was held to be the border with the neighbouring country to the northeast. To say that the river sep- arated drought from abundance wouldn’t be far wrong. Most of the land of the neighbouring country was still dense green jungle, unlike the other side which looked as yellow and arid as a desert.

Those were giant water pipes that sucked water out of the Mekong river to cool the heat of the electricity-making process, more than half of whose production was sold to the neighbouring country. He took the bottle for another big swig before heaving a sigh.	Restructuring of one sentence into three. To be avoided, but here I felt I had no choice. Original phrasing: ‘That was a nuclear plant producing electricity he had seen often so it was a familiar sight.’

The sunshine at about ten in the morning projected its shadow on the ground like that of a bird in flight playing with the wind. He looked at one item of the instrument panel. The blinking numbers told him it was 10:18 on the 14^th of February 2044.
“ห้าสิบปีแล้วหรือเรา” พูดกับตัวเองขึ้นเบาๆ ด้วยรู้ว่าเป็นวันเกิด เขาเกิดในวันแห่งความรักเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2537 และวันนี้แหละที่เขาอยากจะทำอะไรพิเศษๆ ให้ตัวเอง	‘So you’re fifty now,’ he told himself in a low voice. Today was his birthday. He was born on a day of love in 1994 and today he wanted to do something special for himself.

It depleted the bottle to less than the half level. His face grew more flushed than before. He felt the beating of his pulse in his temples. Unexpectedly the picture of his only son appeared in his mind. He tried to force himself not to think about him, but this only made it worse. The picture of his son, a hotheaded student leader shot and grievously wounded who had died in front of his eyes on the hospital bed, appeared clearly. He was dumbstruck for a moment and then felt clear water well up in his eyes.

Being a student leader he’d be under close surveillance at every step from the secret police which had infiltrated every walk of life, but he had only warned him. Telling him to stop interfering with the underground organisation was beyond his ability. For his rebellious democracy-minded son, the thought of opposing the dictatorial government seemed to have been planted and to have ripened, and that had led to an ultra-secret plan hatched to eliminate the leaders of the government … He had learned about this from his son’s mouth moments before he died.

There were no arrests even though it was known which side had done it. It was something that happened time and time again. He felt boiling mad every time he thought about it … It must be a liquid- ation unit of the secret police for sure that had done it this time. They were utterly ruthless, or else the dictatorial government wouldn’t have been able to control the country for almost thirty years after using military power to topple the previous government. Although pressures by the international commu- nity had brought about elections, it was too late: the roots of power had crept deep and spread everywhere. Relatives and followers of the dictatorial group controlled political parties and the media, and held all important busi- nesses of the country in their paws. Therefore it wasn’t strange that the results of the election between the opposition side and the government side had differed from one to ten.
รัฐบาลเผด็จการใน พ.ศ.นี้ดูเหมือนทำอะไรตามอำเภอใจได้ทุกเรื่อง	The dictatorial government these days seemed to be able to do anything they wanted.
เขายังคงเหม่อลอย ใจยังคุกรุ่น ไม่เข้าใจว่าทำไมประวัติศาสตร์อันยาวนานของประเทศจึงตกอยู่กับเงื้อมมือของการทำรัฐประหารอยู่เสมอ แม้จะถูกต่อต้านจากประชาชน เกิดการปะทะล้มตาย แต่ท้ายสุดประชาชนก็ล้มเหลวไปเสียทุกครั้ง และนั่งกลับเป็นประสบการณ์ทำให้ผู้มีอำนาจที่นิยมการทำรัฐประหารรุ่นหลังๆ นำไปปรับปรุงจนสามารถหยั่งลึก นุ่มนวล แยบยลและสัมฤทธิผลในที่สุด	He was still caught in his thoughts, still smouldering with anger. He didn’t understand why the long history of the country had always fallen under the fists of coup makers. Even though they were opposed by the people, leading to deadly clashes, in the end the people lost every time, and that built up experiences which made the coup- making people in power lately alter their ways and grow able to fathom social depths nimbly and cleverly, and achieve success in the end.	= = = = = = Alternative translation: ‘become more sophisticated’.

A complex mountain range which was a national park everyone knew came into view. He decided to lower the cruising level to ten thousand feet, a level still safe, way above the highest peak which topped at four thousand two hundred feet.	An apparent allusion to Khao Yai, judging from three paragraphs down.

He and his son had walked in the forest here many times since his son was only ten. A deep relationship was born in the forest. His son was like him in the love of nature but different in some things. His son dared to think and dared to act, unlike him whose daring was mixed with fear. His one daring in life had been his decision to divorce his pretty wife who was still a socialite and besides loved others more than she did her husband and child. That time he was so confused he almost lost his mind. His dream of having a warm family life was destroyed, but he still had some happiness thanks to his son.

His eyes roved around the scenery down below as time was limited. Two roads winding around mountains separated the national park into four distinctive parts. Before, there used to be only one road going through. The new roads that formed a cross were finished building ten years ago by the current government, even though many didn’t agree because they knew they would have adverse effects on the wild animals and on the forest of which very little was left, and this was only one per cent of projects that never took into account the effects on the environment besides the profit to be made. All projects were approved routinely by parliament with no one daring to oppose them openly for fear of the ubiquitous secret police.

Everybody knew it would benefit the group in power that would get huge under-the-table commissions from a rich neighbouring country.

No more wood in the forests, drought all over the land, people touring instead neighbouring lands that were still mostly green. Even rice sometimes had to be ordered urgently from neighbouring countries. The dozens of tons of rice that filled his plane entirely were proof.
สติกลับคืน ภาพที่เห็นบนจอ ฝ่ายค้านกำลังอภิปรายโจมตีรัฐบาลอย่างดุเดือด	Coming to, the picture he saw on the screen was of the opposition vigorously lambasting the government.
“พูดไปเถอะ พูดยังไงก็ไม่มีทางชนะไอ้พวกนั้นได้หรอก” เขาพูดด้วยน้ำเสียงขุ่นก่อนจะเทเหล้าลงคออีกอึกใหญ่	‘Go on talking. Whatever you say there’s no way you can win over those bastards,’ he said in a resentful voice before swilling another long swig down his throat.
“เสียดาย…ไม่ได้ดูจนจบ” บ่นขึ้นอีกครั้งเมื่อเห็นว่าเครื่องกำลังจะถึงจุดหมายในไม่ช้า	‘Too bad I won’t see the end,’ he grumbled again when he saw that the plane was about to reach its destination.

The lights on the wings announcing imminent landing started blinking automatically. He could see several cargo planes transporting rice that had already landed parked in a row.	= = Alternative translation: ‘a voice that tried to sound normal’.

He felt tense and confused about his decision, but then the plane zoomed upwards as if there was something preventing it from landing. The land unit voice resounded, pressing him with questions. He answered at length saying he was getting ready to land once more.
